Wojciech Jackowski, born in Poland, is an artisan and craftsman based in Amsterdam (NL) whose practice is deeply rooted in the physical reality of craft and an intimate connection to wood. Drawing on his foundational background as a trained violin maker, Jackowski constructs his pieces exclusively from discarded wood salvaged from urban environments. Rather than allowing the salvaged material to dictate his designs, he maintains a deliberate, conceptual control over the form, engaging in a dialogue where the organic nature of the wood informs rather than rules the process.
Having transitioned through abstract, Dadaist, and suprematist influences, his current work marks a return to wood’s rawness as ultimate source of inspiration. Jackowski’s recent creations echo the unsettling sense of beauty, harness the natural beauty of the medium to produce designs that are simultaneously beautiful and unsettling. This approach brings a distinct tension to his objects, evoking warmth and familiarity while leaving the viewer with a subtle, captivating unease.
